INTRODUCTION
Breeding PRE Partbred horses is great fun because it allows breeders to introduce characteristics which are not present in the Purebred Spanish Horse. This might be a big increase in height, bone and mass demonstrated in the Shire x PRE and Percheron x PRE partbreds that have proven so successful for a number of UK Studfarms,

or an increase in galloping speed demonstrated by Thoroughbred x PRE partbreds which make amazing Eventing horses (this cross founded the New Zealand International 3-Day Event Team), or the introduction of some spectacular coat colour genes such as Tobiano, Overo, Leopard Spotting, Champagne, or Silver from breeds where these colours are standard fare.

No matter whether you want one wonderful PRE Partbred foal from your much loved mare or you have a ‘grand plan’ for PRE Partbred breeding for your studfarm you must ensure that all the required paperwork is completed correctly and sent to the BAPSH Ltd Registry Office on time in order to be able to register those precious babies.
Remember Foals CANNOT be registered at all without a correctly completed Covering Certificate issued by the correct authority (PIO or Studbook) which has been filed with the BAPSH Ltd Registry Office in the year the foal was conceived. (Some leeway on CC receipt is possible on a case by case decision but costs are higher)
PRE Partbred foals will require either a BAPSH Ltd Partbred Production Covering Certificate or a Covering Certificate issued from another Breed Studbook if the stallion is not a PRE or PRE Partbred.

ai) Stallions should be tested for the following diseases before commencing covering mares; CEM, EVA, Klebsiella, and Pseudomonas. The test certificate should show a negative result for each disease. Mare owners may ask to see a copy of the Stallion’s certificates.
aii) It is strongly recommended that stallions who are covering naturally should only cover mares which also have a current test certificate showing them negative for these diseases. Where this policy is followed the stallion need not be re-tested annually.
bi) Stallion Owners must always inspect the visiting mare’s Passport, whatever the breed of mare, and determine to their own satisfaction that the visiting mare is indeed the mare named in the Passport.
bii) Stallion Owners should confirm that ALL PRE mares visiting their Stallion/s are APPROVED FOR BREEDING. If in doubt about the mare’s status contact the Registrar or look up the PRE horse on the ANCCE-LGPRE Website (Horse Search)
ci) It is the responsibility of the Stallion Owner to apply for a BOOK of BAPSH Ltd Covering Certificate at the start of the breeding season, and to complete a Certificate as soon as the mare is confirmed in foal.
cii)The stallion owner must send the BAPSH Ltd Registrar the signed and fully completed Office Copy (stub) of the Covering Certificate as soon as possible, and at the latest before 1st Dec

COVERING CERTIFICATES for PARTBRED Production – PRE & PRE PARTBRED STALLIONS

The stallion owner must purchase a book/s of  BAPSH Ltd Covering Certificates from the Registrar. There are 10 Certificates per book and they may be used for several different stallions over a period of years if required. The cost of one Book is £28.00 (inc P&P), but check for current pricing on Registry Services Fees Page .
Each Covering Certificate must be completed accurately by the stallion owner and all the details requested, concerning the mare, should be entered if at all possible. The mare owner should be given the large part of the certificate to keep until the foal is registered in the following year. The small part of the certificate should be forwarded to the Registrar before DECEMBER 1st of the year of Covering.

NOTE: STALLIONS NOT registered with BAPSH Ltd cannot be issued with official Covering Certificates, nor Foal Registration documents. This may result in pedigree PRE Partbred foals that can never be registered with their full parentage recognised, thus losing the majority of their status and value. Once a horse is outside the pedigree Studbooks it can be difficult and expensive to regain entry to the pedigree Studbooks.

2.BASICS FOR MARES
ALL PRE MARES USED FOR PRE PARTBRED BREEDING MUST BE APPROVED FOR REPRODUCTION BY THE SPANISH STUDBOOK (ANCCE-LGPRE) AND BAPSH Ltd REGISTERED BEFORE BEING COVERED BY A STALLION OF ANY BREED

MARES OF OTHER BREEDS/CROSSBREEDS USED FOR PRE PARTBRED BREEDING SHOULD BE OF GOOD CONFORMATION, SOUND, AND FREE FROM VICES AND HEREDITARY DEFECTS. Currently there is no Approval System for non-PRE Mares.
ai) Mares should be tested for the following diseases before commencing covering; CEM, EVA, Klebsiella, and Pseudomonas. The test certificate should show a negative result for each disease. Stallion owners will ask to see a copy of the Mare’s certificates.
If the mare is being covered via Artificial Insemination then the requirement to test the mare for sexually transmitted diseases can be waived providing the mare is in good health
aii) It is strongly recommended that mares are only bred to stallions which have a valid test certificate showing them negative for these diseases – this applies to natural and AI covering. Where this policy is followed the mares need not be re-tested annually within a closed stud.
bi) It is the mare owner’s responsibility to check that the stallion which they use on their mare is accurately identified, registered with BAPSH Ltd,  and is APPROVED FOR REPRODUCTION. If in doubt about the stallion’s status contact the Registrar or look up the PRE horse on the ANCCE-LGPRE Website (Horse Search)
bii) Mare owners are also advised to read the above section on stallions so that they know what type of Covering Certificate they should be given by the stallion owner as soon as the pregnancy is confirmed. Foals cannot be registered without a covering certificate giving the details of their conception.
