WHAT IS AN AFFIX ?

An AFFIX is a word or combination of letters that is used at the start of another word (PREFIX) or at the end of another word SUFFIX) to identify that word as being part of a group, or a type, or an organisation, etc. In the horse-breeding world  we use AFFIXES to identify horses that have been bred by a particular Breeder/Studfarm.

AFFIX CERTIFICATE - Example smflHaving an AFFIX is a great way of advertising your horses to the world, by increasing your profile within your chosen breed, and by helping horse enthusiasts to quickly identify your home-bred horses when they are out competing with new owners.

A PREFIX (at the start of a name) tends to be slightly longer and is often a real word but can be an anagram or a made up word which ‘flows’ well. PREFIXES are useful if your breed has a searchable online database which will group all the horses bred by you together via their PREFIX when people are searching for information. BAPSH Ltd hold two breeding Registries and currently only Register I for PREs has on-line Studbook – www.lgancce.com – which is managed by the ANCCE-LGPRE. However BAPSH expect to have an online studbook for Register II later in 2016, so a PREFIX may be the way to go. It is noticeable that a number of  well known Spanish breeders have changed from SUFFIXES to PREFIXES in recent years.

A SUFFIX (at the end of a name) is usually made up of initials and tends to be shorter and snappier.

The ANCCE-LGPRE have total control over what words they will agree to register for PRE foal names. No name may be longer than 20 letters and spaces inclusive and no Roman Numerals are allowed. Roman Numerals are added automatically by the LGPRE computer program and are used to make a popular name unique.  Punctuation is NOT permitted as part of an AFFIX or the name as a whole so do NOT use hyphens or full-stops or apostrophes as part of AFFIXES for PRE names.

So an AFFIX will make your horses’ names unique and, unless you name two foals with the same name, you will not have any Roman Numerals added to your foal names by LGPRE.

CREATING AN INTEGRATED STUDFARM IDENTITY

If you are just getting started with breeding PREs or Partbred PREs then you have the opportunity to create an integrated studfarm identity by making your registered AFFIX, your registered BRAND, your LGPRE or BAPSH registered Studfarm Name, all match up in some way. So it is well worth giving this some serious thought. Once you have registered your AFFIX, your BRAND, and your LGPRE Studfarm Name you cannot change them without starting afresh with new applications.

NOTES:
1) An AFFIX is used in combination with a horse’s individual name and the MAXIMUM number of letters and     spaces that may be used when registering a PRE is 20 in total,(Partbreds may use 25 letters) so a short AFFIX will give more choice and flexibility in naming individual foals.
2a) An AFFIX may be an actual word or an abreviation of a name or a set of initials.
2b) AFFIXES – Must NOT be any combination of letters that result in a Roman Numeral. AFFIXES that are THREE Letters or LESS will also have to be Approved by the ANCCE-LGPRE. BAPSH Ltd advise using FOUR Letters or more in your AFFIX to avoid this extra ‘hurdle’ before approval.
3a) Indicate below whether the AFFIX will appear at the START of registered names or at the END.
3b) Partbred horses bought in (after weaning) by a BAPSH Ltd member with a registered AFFIX may have that AFFIX added to the end of their name using either the word ‘of’ or the word ‘from’ to attach the AFFIX.
4) Once an AFFIX has been Approved you will receive a laminated Certificate from BAPSH Ltd confirming the Registration
